A first season plan for a new raised bed

Do not fill it with garden soil
Native soil compacts in a raised bed and drains badly. A mix of topsoil, compost and something for structure gives roots air as well as nutrients.
The usual failure of a first bed is dense soil, not poor seed.
Start with forgiving crops
Beans, chard, radish, courgette and most herbs tolerate beginner mistakes. Cauliflower and celery do not.
A first season that produces something builds the habit that makes the second season better.
Plant closer than the packet says
Raised bed spacing is tighter than row spacing on a seed packet, which assumes field conditions and machinery. Intensive spacing shades the soil and suppresses weeds.
Leave enough room to get a hand in, and no more.
Water deeply, not often
Frequent light watering encourages shallow roots. A thorough soak two or three times a week produces a deeper root system that copes with heat.
Push a finger in to check rather than watering on a schedule.
Mulch as soon as plants are up
A couple of inches of mulch halves evaporation and suppresses most weed germination. On a roof or a hot yard it is the single highest value job of the season.
Keep it slightly away from stems to avoid rot at the collar.
Keep a note of what happened
Write down what was planted where and how it did. In year two that note is worth more than any general advice, because it is about your bed and your light.
It also stops the same crop going in the same place repeatedly.
