Drainage holes are non negotiable
A pot without drainage will eventually drown a plant, no matter how carefully you water. Roots sitting in standing water cannot take up oxygen and rot follows.
Where a decorative pot has no holes, use it as a cover pot with a plain nursery pot inside.
Saucers protect floors, not plants
A saucer catches run-off, which is good for the floor and bad for the plant if the pot then sits in it. Empty saucers after watering.

Material changes watering frequency
Terracotta breathes and dries fast; plastic and resin hold moisture much longer. Neither is better, but they demand different habits and you should not mix them casually in one display.

Size up gradually
Moving a plant into a vastly larger pot leaves wet soil that roots cannot reach, which encourages rot. Increase pot diameter by a couple of inches at a time.
The exception is fast growing annuals, which can take a big jump.
Weight and wind again
Light resin pots are easy to move and easy to blow over once a plant is tall. Either weight the base or choose a heavier material for anything with height.
A pot that tips repeatedly will damage the plant more than a slightly wrong size would.
Think about winter
Ceramic and terracotta left full of wet soil can crack when it freezes. Either bring them in, empty them, or choose frost resistant materials for anything staying out.
Resin and metal handle a New York winter far more reliably.
